what does it take to get from the camera to the blog?
i’ll illustrate it for you, start to finish.
here we have a picture of a double batch of stud-muffin named craig. this is what the picture looks like when you look at the back of the camera. canon usually does a good job with guessing the color, but this in this case it went into pink-overdrive.

first, we run through the images with color and contrast correction. you can see we’re already starting to push this one in a more artsy direction. i added some blue to the background so the blue of his eyes will pop out in future steps. every picture out clients see get at least this far.

next, we do some touch-ups and make those good features shine. it’s subtle, but important. you can start to see his eyes pop out from the shadows. we make sure never to go overboard. craig’s personality isn’t plastic, and we don’t think his face should be either.

then we go over images with a complete processing system that sometimes involves over 30 steps… and voilà, this is what you’ll see on the blog.

occasionally, if we think the image is right for it we’ll throw on some texture or borders. it definitely doesn’t work every time, but when it does it’s beautiful. these textured images work very well for huge prints as they become piece of art. i especially like how the full spectrum faintly permeates the image.

flip back to the beginning and check out what we started with.
